What EA backup codes are for
Backup codes belong to two-factor authentication (2FA) on your EA account. With 2FA on, any unknown device that tries to log in first has to enter a code from EA. In EA’s own words, if you can’t reach your chosen verification method, a new device gets into your EA account through backup codes and nothing else.
That is exactly the situation of a Comfort Trade order. Someone working on your order opens your club in the Web App, from a device EA has never seen. Your phone or inbox is not there, so a backup code lets the sign-in through. This is why the checkout asks, in any case, for your EA account e-mail and backup codes after payment.
Turn on two-factor authentication
These are EA’s steps. Labels can differ slightly if your account is set to another language.
Open Security and Privacy
Sign in to your EA Account and go to the Security and Privacy page.
Find Two-factor authentication
Scroll down, select Two-factor authentication, then Turn On.
Pick a method
Choose Email, Authenticator app or Text Message. For an app, select Set up and follow the steps.
Confirm with a code
Select Send Code and enter the code that arrives by e-mail, in the app or by text.
View and keep your backup codes
Right after you set up 2FA, select View backup codes and write the codes down in a safe place, as EA recommends. Paper in a drawer or a locked notes app both work; a screenshot in a shared photo album does not. EA may ask you to verify your identity before it shows or changes backup codes, so keep your 2FA method at hand.
What to send for a coin order
- In any case: your EA account e-mail plus a few fresh backup codes.
- Send them only in the order chat at the checkout, never in public chats or by e-mail to strangers.
- Keep the remaining codes for yourself and note which ones you have sent.
- If the trader says a code no longer works, send a new one in the same chat.
Codes not arriving?
If EA’s e-mail with the verification code doesn’t show up, EA suggests resending it first. If that fails, check that your inbox isn’t full, look in the spam folder, make sure nothing on your side blocks EA, and confirm that you are signed in to the right EA account. A past e-mail from ea@e.ea.com with images allowed can also help before you resend.
You can change or add 2FA methods later: on the same Security and Privacy page select Two-factor authentication and then Edit next to a method. With several methods on, you can still verify when your main one is out of reach.
Backup codes: common questions
Where do I find my EA backup codes?
On your EA Account Security and Privacy page, under Two-factor authentication. Once 2FA is on, select View backup codes and write them down somewhere safe. EA may ask you to verify your identity before it shows or changes backup codes, so keep access to the e-mail, app or phone you chose as your 2FA method.
Can a backup code be used twice?
The checkout treats every code as single-use: once a trader has signed in with it, it no longer works. That is why it asks for a few fresh codes rather than one. Keep a note of which codes you have sent, so that you never pass on a code that is already spent.
Is two-factor authentication required for the Web App?
EA links its two-factor guide from the FC 27 Web App help page and recommends 2FA, but we found no EA statement that it is mandatory. For a Comfort Trade order it matters anyway: with 2FA on, backup codes are how a trader gets past the new-device check without your phone.
Is it safe to send backup codes for a coin order?
EA asks players never to share verification codes with anyone, and its rules do not allow coin buying or comfort trades. So it is not something EA approves. If you go ahead, send codes only in the order chat at the checkout, keep the rest private, and change nothing on your account until the order is completed.
What if I get a new phone?
EA advises saving your backup codes and moving your authenticator app data before you reset or remove the old device. If you lose the app, a backup code may let you back into your account. Do this before ordering coins, not halfway through a delivery.
